Echoes from Valley School
---the Closing Celebration
at Valley Elementary School in Huntsville on
By Kera Erickson
Valley School has stood in the center of Huntsville for as long as most of us can remember. The original part, including the gymnasium and old boiler room, was built in 1936. Most of the current building was constructed around the gymnasium area in 1957. An additional wing was built on the east side of the school in 1970.
Prior to Valley School, several Huntsville schools sat on the current site. Eden and Liberty had their own schools, but by 1950, all valley students attended school in Huntsville.
Beginning fall of 2009, Valley Bulldogs will be in a new building in Eden. School principal, Tommy Lee, plans on making sure school traditions continue on in the new building. An emblem from an old school jacket will be used as a pattern for the image on the new gymnasium floor. Other school memorabilia will be incorporated, or on display throughout the new school.
Valley Elementary School staff, with the help of various community members, are planning a farewell party for the current Valley School building. This will give school alumni— past and present— and all those who have fond memories of Valley School to say good bye to the building they have grown to love.
An open house will be held on Saturday, May 9, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. School memorabilia, timeline, and newspaper clippings will be on display. A DVD will show images of school history throughout the years and past play and events on DVD will be replayed in the halls. The school cooks are looking through old recipes and making some of alumni’s favorite treats. The school, including the basement, will be opened for tours. Over the years hundreds of student’s have signed their name to the basement walls.
There will be a short program held from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m.
Mark your calendar for this historical event. All community members are invited to attend. In preparation for this event, school memorabilia is sought. Those planning the reunion are looking for old school uniforms, copies of pictures, newspaper clipping, or movies of school events. If you have memorabilia you would like to share please contact Jeaniel Sauer at Valley Elementary School (801) 452-4180.
